Spring Awakening: Why This Season Matters for Our Lakes

As winter starts to fade and the weather slowly warms up, a lot is changing around us. The days are getting longer, the air feels lighter, and everything starts to come back to life. But while we’re noticing these changes on the surface, there is just as much happening beneath the water.

Spring is one of the most important times of the year for the Great Lakes. As snow melts and rain picks up, everything on land begins to flow into the lakes. That includes things that help the ecosystem, but also things that can harm it. Fertilizers, trash, and pollution can all make their way into the water during this time, which can lead to bigger problems later in the summer.

This is where small, everyday choices start to matter more than we think.

Being more mindful about what we use in our yards, picking up trash when we see it, and paying attention to where things go when they leave our homes can all make a real difference. These are simple habits, but they add up, especially during a season like this.

The Great Lakes provide drinking water to over 40 million people and hold a huge portion of the world’s freshwater. They are not just something we visit in the summer. They are something we rely on every day, whether we realize it or not.

This time of year is a good reminder to slow down and be a little more intentional. The way we treat our environment now has a direct impact on what these lakes look like in the months ahead.

At Nalu Wave Co., this is exactly why we started. It is about appreciating the water, spending time in it, and doing our part to help protect it.

Spring is a fresh start. It is a chance to be more aware, make better choices, and take care of something that gives so much back to us.
